I hate it when this happens. I was at Taco mac in Alpharetta, Georgia, you know, the one on Windward Parkway? That’s where I was. Mind you, I don’t hate that I was there, but I hate it when I order a beer off the draft list (this time that beer being Sweetwater Chocolope Stout), and the server comes back and says the keg just kicked. Doh! That’s what I hate.

I ordered a different beer of course, but then it dawned on me that I had a bottle of Chocolope at home. Didn’t I? I got home and checked. I did, and I’m here to tell you about it.

Sweetwater Chocolope Stout is named for a strain of cannabis called chocolope. I had no idea this was true, but I just Binged it for the purposes of this review. I hope the police aren’t watching, because I don’t somke that stuff, though I have no problem with those that do. I’m a brew guru after all, not a pot guru.

Sweetwater Chocolope Stout doesn’t have any marijuana in it; I’ll let them explain.

The 420 Strain is back in black with a chocolaty stout and head-turning aroma. Our unholy trinity of hops, strain-specific terpenes and natural hemp-type flavors complement a roasty malt backbone, resulting in a dreamy medley of mouth-watering flavors: Tropical fruit on the inhale, coffee on the exhale, gooey chocolate all the way through.

Sweetwater Chocolope Stout has an alcohol content of 6.4% by volume with 35 IBUs. Had they had any left, I would have paid $6.80 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac. It was selling for $9.99 a six-pack at Kroger. This is the 3^rd entry in Sweetwater’s 420 Strain series, after 420 Strain G13 and 420 Strain G13 Mango Kush.

Sweetwater Chocolope Stout pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy head and a nose of milk chocolate and terpenes. Taking a sip, the beer is smooth and chocolaty with more of that rich, creamy milk chocolate flavor infused with hemp notes, tasting like, well, pot smells. It finishes gently roasty and herbal in the finish. Is this what a marijuana brownie tastes like? I’ve never had one, but I imagine it might be. Very tasty indeed, the dark dank hemp notes infuse the beer and make it a real treat. I didn’t get the tropical notes, but they may have faded with time as my bottle does say best enjoyed by 12/16/19. I enjoyed it on 1/26/2020.
