Sweetwater 420 Strain Jack Herer Harvest Ale

Review Date 11/10/2020  By John Staradumsky

Who the hell is Jack Herer? I’m sure I don’t know. My suspicion was he had something to do with marijuana, since he’s featured on the new Sweetwater 420 Strain Jack Herer Harvest Ale. Of course that supposition is not a stretch, but it does turn out to be right. Wikipedia calls Herer, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 70, the "Emperor of Hemp.” Apparently, his brand lives on as Sweetwater says the use of his name is “Officially Licensed.”

This is the newest release in the Sweetwater 420 Strain line that began with Sweetwater 420 Strain G13. I have enjoyed each and every one of them. This onen is based on a red ale, as we shall soon see.

Sweetwater says on their website:

Jack Herer Harvest Ale is our version of a hoppy red IPA, with aroma and flavor notes of pine, citrus, orange and a hint of pepper fit for the original Emperor himself. Brewed and enjoyed in memory of Jack Herer.

Ingredients from the website:

Malt Bill: 2 Row, Wheat, Rye, Carapils, Chocolate

Hops: Centennial, Cascade, Amarillo

Dry Hop: Centennial, Amarillo

Sweetwater 420 Strain Jack Herer Harvest Ale has an alcohol content of 6.7% by volume with 45 IBUs. I paid $11.39 for my six-pack at Target. My bottles are dated as best by 12/12/20, but I thin k it will do well after that, and you know I will save a bottle to find out.

Sweetwater 420 Strain Jack Herer Harvest Ale pours to tawny amber color with a colossal head formation and an aromatic nose with resiny hops and lots more hemp dank notes. Indeed, the heady hemp aromas rise from the glass in waves and are discernible from quite a distance. Taking a sip, there is some chewy stewed malt with a dash of caramel, permeated with dank earthy hop and hemp notes. A bit of piney resin pokes through, too. The beer finishes bitter and aromatic and quite tasty.

This is a very tasty beer indeed, and one I hope returns next year. It is a fall seasonal worth seeking out.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
