I’m sorry. I’m not REALLY sorry. Remember that line by Pee Wee Hermann? It’s in a few of the movies he made with Cheech and Chong if you’ve never seen it. Well, Pee Wee, you now have a beer to go along with that gag: Stone Sorry Not Sorry IPA, a collaboration beer between Stone of Escondido, California; 4 Hands Brewing of St. Louis, Missouri; and Bale Breaker Brewing of Yakima, Washington. Bale Breaker? Breweries really have weird names these days. Pee Wee would approve!
Anyway,
the beer is a double IPA brewed with peaches for added fruitiness. I haven’t
seen it in bottles though Total Wine claims they have it if their website is
to be believed. However, it was good old Taco Mac to the rescue with a “tap
takeover” by Stone. Tap Takeover, of course, is a relative term when you
have 100 taps. About 4 of them really got taken over.
Stone says about the beer:
We make no apologies for the fact that we love brewing bold, flavorful, hop-centric beers. Naturally, we welcomed the opportunity to work with two amazing craft breweries that share our lupulin-fueled dedication: St. Louis-based 4 Hands Brewing Co., known for its innovative IPAs; and Bale Breaker Brewing Co., whose owners’ family has farmed hops in Washington’s Yakima Valley for generations. Since theirs was the first hop farm to commercially grow the beloved Simcoe variety, using that piney, stone fruit-like hop was a must. Puréed peaches upped the fruit factor, while experimental hops HBC 342 and HBC 344 introduced notes of stone fruit, tropical fruit, berries and citrus to this IPA. Yes, we made another IPA. We concede it’s not surprising, but we are who we are: an unapologetic band of hopheads psyched to explore the ever-expanding IPA universe.
A point there. This is Stone’s umpteen billionth IPA. But who is counting? Stone Sorry Not Sorry IPA has an alcohol content of 9.3% by volume (a sipper, then) with 70 IBUs. I paid $7.50 for an 11-ounce glass at Taco Mac; it runs $8.99 for a bomber at Total Wine.
Hops used according to Stone:
Warrior
Simcoe
Mosaic
HBC 342 & HBC 344
My glass of Stone Sorry Not Sorry Double IPA arrived a beautiful orange amber color with a thick fluffy white head and luscious peach, passion fruit and pineapple in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a moderate (but not thin) maltiness, more of the tropical fruits I got in the nose (though not really the peach), lemon rind, and a dry grassy bitter finish.
All in all, not a bad DIPA, the peach adds some subtle fruitiness on top of the fruity hops. A decent beer all around, but I’m sorry I tried it. Que Pee Wee Hermann voice….I’m not REALLY sorry.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
