Thanks again to Chuck Triplett! He always ends me such great beers, this time including a can of Spring House Big Gruesome Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout. Spring House of Lancaster, Pennsylvania does not sell its beer in Georgia, and this is the first beer I’ve ever tried from them. Always fun to try beer from a “new to me” brewery, although Spring House has been brewing since they opened in 2006.
“Peanut Butter” beers can be hard to pull off from my experience. They usually taste more to me like a Mary Jane candy than a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, which is of course the intention. I can tell you that Big Gruesome Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout carried the theme better than most in my experience. Being the day before Halloween as I type, I can tell you that this beer is very apropos to the season-monsters on the can, candy inside it.
From the website:
Creamy, malty, and full-bodied, the Big Gruesome Stout is scary good. The intense, roasty flavor comes from two types of chocolate malt and raw cocoa nibs. The stout is then aged on whole vanilla beans and more raw cocoa nibs to enhance the chocolate flavors. Rich peanut butter is introduced throughout the entire brewing process to make this stout even more Gruesome.
Spring House Big Gruesome Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout is a year-round release and has an alcohol content of 8.3% by volume.
Spring House Big Gruesome Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout pours to a jet-black color with a medium head of spritzy tan foam and a luscious peanut butter cup nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body with big chocolaty notes followed by smooth, creamy peanut butter. A lot of these beers taste nutty (but not peanut buttery) to me, but this one really leans more towards the peanut butter. Those peanut butter notes are wrapped tightly in a layer of chocolate, just as a good Reese’s should be.
One of the best such beer I’ve had. Happy Halloween!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
