Little Miss Muffet,
Sat on a tuffet,
Drinking her dark roasty beer,
Along came a spider,
Who sat down beside her,
And bit the poor girl on the rear.
Hey, I needed something that rhymes with beer. Sue me. Little did we know the spider did bite Miss Muffet, sitting atop her tuffet, whatever the heck that is. The Spider’s name was Boris, and he works in the publicity department of the Spider Bite Beer Company of Holbrook, Long Island, New York. He stole the poor girl’s brew, renamed it Boris the Spider Russian Imperial Stout and, well, the rest is history.
Like all of Spider Bite beers, Boris the Spider Russian Imperial Stout is brewed under contract by Mercury Brewing Company in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Mercury’s own brands include Ipswich ales and Clown Shoes brews. Good stuff! It should also be noted that Hoppin’ Frog brewery of Ohio has a beer called B.O.R.IS. the Crusher, also an imperial stout. Their BORIS, in fact, stands for Big Old Russian Imperial Stout. Both beers imperial stouts, both named Boris? Let’s not fight, boys….
From the Spider Bite website:
Back for Winter 2014! Boris pours black and opaque like a moonless sky over Siberia. Eight different malts bring a complex aroma and flavor of chocolate, coffee and roasty sweetness. Just in case the winter gets too cold, we brewed this giant spider to 10% abv. So grab your snifter and ushanka and enjoy.
Seems like they need to update that. Anyway, Spider Bite beers are not sold in Georgia, but I got a bottle from Jimmy White when we hooked up at Taco Mac for a beer.
Spider Bite Boris the Spider Russian Imperial Stout pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head and a rich boozy dark chocolate nose. Taking a sip, the beer is full and luscious with a thick full mouthfeel packed with deep dark chocolate and rich roasty malt goodness. A little licorice comes out in the finish, just a little mind you, but more of the deep dark heavy cocoa notes and intense roast emerge into the warming alcohol finish.
I’m really loving the intense deep roasty notes here, this is a very nicely done imperial stout. Get bitten by Boris, why don’t you. You won’t mind, I promise.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
