Stopped by this Fairfield, CT brewpub Thursday night on my way to Philadelphia and a trip that would eventually take me to 8 brewpubs and beer bars. As it turned out, this stop was probably my least memorable, but in all fairness Southport had some stiff competition. The beers were decent and drinkable, but there was only one that really impressed me. The atmosphere was quite pleasant, the brewing equipment readily visible upon entrance, lots of brick and wood tones to please the eye as well. I sauntered over to the bar, a band had just finished playing. There were ten beers on tap, a respectable number to be sure. Samplers came in two flights of five.
Black Rock Stout was roasty, smooth, nice beer but thinner in body than i would have liked for the style.
From the brewery website:
Aroma of hops, pine, chocolate malts, and roasting. Poured
very dark brown in color with a big, dense, creamy, beige head that lasted
throughout. Opaque. Flavor of burnt malts, chocolate, roasting, and
licorice.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
