I goofed. I passed some Girl Scouts on a few occasions, and I didn’t buy any cookies. I know its for a good cause, but I don’t really eat a lot of cookies, and if I buy them, I will end up eating them. Now it’s come back to bite me, because I really should have picked up a box of Thin Mints. They would have gone wonderfully with a bottle of Southern Tier Thick Mint Imperial Stout.
Now, at the time I saw the Girl Scouts (at Lowes and Kroger), I had yet to pick up a 4-pack of the Thick Mint Stout, which Southern Tier describes as “A dessert beer brewed with chocolate & mint”. I’ve seen this beer at Total Wine in the past, but at a ridiculous $19.99 a four-pack. I refused to pay it. When I saw it at Target for $12.34, though, I snapped it right up-and wished I had bought those cookies.
Southern Tier says on their website:
Inspired by the legendary cookie, Thick Mint joins our world-class rated Blackwater Series of dessert beers alongside Crème Brûlée, Choklat Oranj, Salted Caramel & Choklat in 2017. This imperial stout is a mouthful of perfectly balanced mint & chocolate. Roasty malts coalesce with notes of Belgian dark chocolate, sweet mint & just a touch of sweet caramel. So decadently delicious, you’ll wish you’d bought another box… er, bottle.
See? They wish they had bought a box, too.
Southern Tier Thick Mint Imperial Stout has an alcohol content of 10% by volume and I already told you what I paid for it. My bottle is stamped DOB 11/13/17 06:39AM.
Southern Tier Thick Mint Imperial Stout pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head of foam and a vibrant mint and chocolate nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a full body with rich creamy chocolate notes like the milk chocolate of the cookies with a hint of darker chocolate and a permeating minty (peppermint?) aroma and flavor. The beer finishes roasty balanced and fresh minty. It really does taste like the cookies!
Style? You could call it an imperial stout, but the mint and chocolate permeate to such a degree I’ll call it a spiced beer.
Would I buy it again? Not at $19.99, no way, no how. $12.34 is a little more reasonable, and since that’s what I paid I’ll rate as a rebuy-at that price. Since most retailers seem to charge more, I’m deducting a half star from my rating to hedge my bets.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
