Do you live in Buffalo, New York? I don’t. If you do, though, Southern Tier Beer Company of Lakewood, New York has a beer for you: Southern Tier One Buffalo Our Beer. As in, Buffalo’s “our beer”, because it’s intended for fans of the local sports teams like the NFL’s Bills. It’s a crisp, unassuming blonde ale that you can sip a few of during the game but never get tired of. It’s also shrewd marketing on the part of Southern Tier.
Southern Tier One Buffalo wasn’t marketed as “our Beer” here in Atlanta (for some reason Taco mac had it listed on the draft menu as “Green Buffalo”. Having never seen a green buffalo, I was a bit confused, but hey. It tasted good. So I drank it. Southern Tier beers were spotlighted for the December, 2016 brewery of the month promotion, but I didn’t get a chance to try One Buffalo until January.
Southern Tier says:
One Buffalo is brewed in partnership with Pegula Sports and Entertainment (PSE).
PSE seems to be some kind of business-sports conglomerate in Buffalo, and should you so desire, you can read more about them here.
There is no detailed breakdown of the ingredients here, but they do say One Buffalo is made with Willamettes and Centennials, 2 Row malt, oats and wheat. It has an alcohol content of 4.8% by volume with 20 IBUs. This was only available at Taco Mac and was not sold here in cans or bottles. I paid $6 for a 20-ounce mug.
My mug of Southern Tier One Buffalo Our Beer arrived a golden straw color with a medium sized short lived head and earthy floral hops in the nose. Taking a sip, I get a light crisp malt and tart wheat in the palate, with a grassy herbal hop finish and a lingering bitter buzz.
Take this for what it is, a tasty refreshing blonde Ale with a firm hop presence and solid malt presence and you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. I paired my mug with a plate of Buffalo Wings. Extra credit if you do too-maybe during a Bills game?
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
