SMASH! You know what that means. At least, I hope you do if you’re a beer geek. In the world of beer, SMASH means Single Malt and Single Hop. How about a double SMASH? Is that made with two malts and two hops? Of course not, at least not in the case of Southern Tier 2X SMASH Single Varietal Double IPA. It just means you get more of them than you would in a standard IPA.
I didn’t know much about this beer going in. I saw it on the draft menu at my Canton Taco Mac and ordered a glass. I immediately identified the Mosaics and was impressed by their expert employment here. Southern Tier never ceases to impress me with their 2X line of brews.
From the website:
2XSMASH is the newest in our line of single malt and single hop India Pale Ales, brewed with Mosaic hops and Special pale malt. Even simplified to one variety of hop and one type of malt, it is amazing how complex the flavor is. Mosaic hops are known for their luxurious tropical citrus notes like passionfruit and work absolutely brilliantly with the richness of Special pale malt. Cheers!
INGREDIENTS: Ale yeast, Mosaic hops and Special Pale malt
Southern Tier 2X SMASH Single Varietal Double IPA has an alcohol content of 8.1% by volume and I paid $5.75 for an 11-ounce draft. It runs $9.99 a six-pack in cans and $10.99 in bottles.
My glass of Southern Tier 2X SMASH Single Varietal Double IPA arrived a bright orange amber color with a thick head of foam and tropical passion fruit and pineapple in the nose. A sip reveals slightly toasty treacle malt, pineapple and bright citrus, and a long dry grassy bitterness.
Delicious, and I think very fairly priced for such a wonderful treat.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
