Hail and well met, good beer people! Today I’m happy to be opining on a beer that is from the second microbrewery I’ve experienced from Mississippi: Southern Prohibition in Hattiesburg. The beer in question is Devil’s Harvest American Pale Ale, and on the can they describe it as a devilishly dank dry hopped pale ale. The infernal seems to be a popular convention for beer naming, and as such I thought I’d run down some of the examples I’ve come across in my many years of beer drinking.
Old Nick was the first such beer I ever encountered, and of course from Belgium we have the legendary Duvel, Lucifer (also Black Lucifer), and Satan. There’s La Maudite (the damned) from Unibroue in Canada and Inferno Ale from The Lost Abbey. Victory has the wonderful Hop Devil and a Wild Devil, you can visit the Devil’s Den with Grumpy Old Men, or even visit breweries like Devil’s Backbone. Devil Mountain Brewing, while makers of tasty beers in the 90s, are sadly no more.
The brewery says this about Devil’s Harvest American Pale Ale, a year-round offering:
Devil's Harvest is an American Pale Ale with the soul of an India Pale Ale. Late hopped entirely with Citra and Centennial, and then dry-hopped with the same one-two combo leaves a floral and fruit haze rising from the beer. Enjoy this new reincarnation, we are.
Southern Prohibition Devil’s Harvest APA has an alcohol content of 5.8% by volume and I paid $8.99 for a six-pack, which I bought at Wild Hare Beer Company in Spring Hill, TN.
Southern Prohibition Devil’s Harvest APA pours to a bright orange amber color with a thick creamy head and a soft malt and citrus fruity nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a firm caramel maltiness up front appropriate to the style followed by bright citrus orange and grapefruit notes all leading into a dry grassy, herbal bitter finish.
A very nice APA well balanced between hop and malt and just what I want in the style. Dare I say it’s a hell of a good beer? I think I just did….
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
