New brewery alert! Well, new for me anyway as this is my first review of a beer from the Southern Barrel Brewing Company of Bluffton, South Carolina. Southern Barrel doesn’t really say when they opened their doors on their website. They just say the brewery was recently built in Bluffton, SC but it’s been a long time coming. We are proud to brew delicious craft beers there 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Nice to know they’re working night and day to make beer drinkers happy. On that theme, they certainly made me happy with Southern Barrel takeaway IPA, a classic American IPA in the original west coast style. Which has nor become the east coast style. But we won’t even go there.
From the label:
Just like every good back swing starts with a smooth take-away; our IPA was designed to be smooth all the way to the finish. We layer five unique hop varieties together to ensure a complex deep citrus flavor and aroma that balances on its solid malt backbone. Fore!
Southern Barrel Takeaway IPA has an alcohol content of 6% by volume with 65 IBUs. It runs $10.99 a six-pack in cans here in Georgia.
Southern Barrel Takeaway IPA pours to a dark orange color with a thick cauliflower head and a zesty orange and grapefruit citrus nose. Taking a sip, the beer is chewy with thick caramel malt (yay!) and loaded with slightly resiny, robustly citrusy grapefruit peel and orange zest notes. At the last, I get some herbal oregano and a long, dry bitter finish.
A nicely done IPA the way I like them, with citrus and resiny hops and malt. Yes, malt! Imagine that in an IPA. Southern Barrel did, and the results are worth checking out.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
