I enjoyed this beer when it was young, and seem to recall it having a somewhat fruity character to it back then. After about six months, that fruitiness is gone and is replaced by a wonderful caramely-sweet maltiness, a hint of citrus and bready yeasty notes. A warming alcohol finish makes this the perfect beer for sipping on a cold January night. I have to admit that I was curious at first as to the decision to release this beer in summer, but now I think Mr. Eggleston at Smuttynose was right on the mark to do so: it allows the savvy drinker to age the stuff for drinking in the cold winter months, when a hearty, warming, robust ale is most welcome.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
