It’s always nice to get beer from a new brewery, and that’s exactly what happened to me recently when a co-worker and good friend from our Seattle office provided me with a bottle of Silver City Oktoberfest from the Silver City brewery of Bremerton, Washington. Silver City originated in Silverdale in 1996, so they were on the map the last time I visited some six years or so ago.
Silver City expanded in 2010, though, to meet increasing demand, and that’s when they opened their Bremerton facility, where the beer I am drinking was brewed and bottled. From the label of my bomber:
Silver City Oktoberfest is an authentic interpretation of this classic amber lager. Just a few sips of this luscious brew, and you are transported to the great beer halls of Bavaria. You will enjoy the rich malty sweetness, and spicy hop character of this popular Silver City seasonal beer.
Silver City Oktoberfest beer is released in August, and my bottle has a best by date of 011714. The beer has an alcohol content of 6.25% and is made with caramel, pale, Munich, carafe and pilsner malts as well as herrsbrucker hops from Germany.
Silver City Oktoberfest pours to a bright orange color with a medium sized creamy head formation and a wonderfully nutty malt nose. Taking a sip, this beer really screams toasty-nutty malt goodness in a way few other Oktoberfests here in the United States do, with a few exceptions. It goes beyond that, though, with notes of caramel and Bit-O-Honey candy, all leading into a balanced to perhaps slightly sweet finish. All in all, a simply luscious Oktoberfest beer that I wish I could get locally. Not to be missed, the big nutty Munich malt melanoidins and caramel notes and overall fresh malty flavors make this a real treat.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
