Happy 107th Birthday Shiner! That’s right, the Spoetzel brewery of Shiner, Texas turns 107 years old in 2016, and have they got a great birthday beer for us. Shiner Birthday Beer 107 Hoppy Pilsner is a far cry from Shiner Birthday Beer 106 (which we just called Shiner Birthday Beer at the time). That beer was specially brewed to taste like a slice of birthday cake, and gosh if it didn’t! Shiner Birthday Beer 107 is a back to basics classic beer style, German pilsner.
This was the second of two pilsners that I enjoyed in a row at Taco Mac on a fine Thursday evening. They were each different in their own way, perhaps most notably in that this is German Pils and Lagunitas calls theirs a Czech Pils. The latter is usually softer in malt character, perhaps a tad buttery and with a gentler hop profile than German Pilsner.
Shiner says about 107 on their website:
Celebrate 107 years of Shiner with our latest birthday beer, a limited-edition brew that’s true to our roots. This classic German-style pilsner has an extra hoppy bite thanks to a heaping helping of Hallertau & Czech Saaz hops. Better enjoy it while you can – this birthday party won’t last forever.
Shiner Birthday Beer 107 Hoppy Pilsner has an alcohol content of 5% by volume with 30 IBUs. It’s a spring release and I paid $5 for a 20-ounce mug at Taco Mac; it runs $8.99 a six-pack in bottles. This beer is also sold canned.
My mug of Shiner Birthday Beer 107 Hoppy Pilsner arrived a bright golden color with a thick creamy head of foam and lots of grassy herbal hop aroma. Taking a sip, there’s beautiful crisp biscuity malt up front followed by herbal grassy hop aroma and a medium drying bitterness.
Not an overly complex beer, but really a truly delightful balance between crisp malt and vibrant Noble hops, and all that at a great price. Judged to style, this one is a winner, so make sure you grab some before its gone.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
