Congratulations, Service Brewing Company of Savannah, Georgia! You just turned a year old on July 24th. I celebrated this for you a little early, ordering up a delicious mug of your Ground Pounder Pale Ale on July 16th at Taco Mac here in Canton, Georgia, several hours to the west of Savannah. I’m certainly glad I did, too, because this beer is delightful indeed.
Service Brewing is owned and operated by veterans, and some of their proceeds are donated to veterans’ causes. The company offers three year-round brews: the beer under consideration today, the excellent Compass Rose IPA and Rally Point Bohemian-Style Pilsner. They also do seasonal brews and one-offs and specialties, the latter mainly available at the brewery tasting room.
Service says about Ground Pounder on their website:
The foot soldiers of the Infantry belong to the oldest and proudest branch of the army, their boots “always ready, then, now and forever.” Our Ground Pounder Pale Ale honors those that have worn out their soles preserving the freedoms we cherish.
This medium-bodied pale ale carries a solid balance of caramel malt, spice and citrus notes with bold, piney hop characteristics that deliver an herbal infusion of lime and crushed black pepper.
Service Brewing Ground Pounder Pale Ale has an alcohol content of 4.6% by volume and I paid $6.50 for a 20-ounce mug at Taco Mac. It sells for $9.99 in six-packs of cans in my area.
My mug of Service Brewing Ground Pounder Pale Ale arrived a beautiful orange amber in color with a light head of foam and an assertive resiny hop nose. Taking a sip, I got a little caramel malt up front, then waves and waves of bitter resiny pine hop flavor and a long dry bitter finish.
In many ways, I found this to be a slightly lighter version of their Compass Rose IPA. It’s less balanced on the malt, but this is a pale ale, and a fine American Pale Ale in style it is. Kudos to Service as well for not calling this a “session IPA” (no such thing), instead being more honest about its style.
I’ve sent several friends around the country cans of Compass Rose IPA to try, and it was well received indeed. I’ll be doing the same with this delightful beer as well. Oh, and of course, I’ll be buying more for myself as well. Sharing a great beer is a noble thing to do, but not all your great beer, after all.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
