Status report: I’m sipping a mug of Second Self A.T. Ale (a take on ATL, where the brewery is located), and this makes 970 credits in my Brewniversity studies here at Taco Mac. Just 30 more to go and I’m a Chancellor! Won’t that be a great day my friends? Anyway, time to talk about the beer, and what a beer it is. I’ve had a number of beers from Second Self now, and I can’t recall being disappointed yet. Here’s another entry in their streak of success.
A.T. Ale is meant to be a beer to be enjoyed rather than pondered, though I think one can easily do both. The can describes it as “local, crisp, clean, refreshing, crushable”. I’ll agree with all that. It’s a simple pale ale, a great beer to reach for when you want to just drink a beer. But I found it a little different, too, in a very enjoyable way.
From the website:
ATaLe is a tribute to our home. We are a LOCAL Atlantans born and bred who are inspired by the city we love. This is the beer you want to drink when you just want to drink a beer. Its CRISP and CLEAN taste goes anywhere with anything. A truly REFRESHING Atlanta Ale.
Second Self ATale has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume with 42 IBUs. I paid $5.50 for a 20-ounce mug at Taco Mac, and it runs $10.99 a six-pack in cans at Total Wine. The former seems reasonable to me for draft, the latter is too high for a beer meant to be “crushable”. This is a new beer as of March of 2017.
My mug of Second Self ATale arrived a bright orange amber color with a thick creamy head formation and not much going on in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a smooth clean satisfying malty palate that leads into a simply beautiful herbal grassy lingering long dry finish. Nobody does these English style pale ales these days though this one is hopped on steroids, featuring delightful grassy malts.
I enjoyed this so much I’d give it 4 ½ stars as a classic pale ale, though it loses a ½ star for the high price. That won’t stop me from bringing some home all the same.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
