Schilling Lentenbock

Bonus time! It was bonus time at work, bonuses come in the spring, you see, and I had just received mine one fine Friday. I decided to splurge a little on beer, not that I needed beer, you see, because I had just bought some on a birthday brewery crawl and then on vacation in North Carolina a week later.

I had not, however, bought any beer from Half Time Beverage in a few months, which means I had not bought any Schilling beer in a few months, and that was a situation which was simply intolerable. One of the beers I bought, and one of the first beers I drank when my box arrived, was Schilling Lentenbock.

A doppelbock! That’s why I simply had to have it, and I actually got two Schilling doppelbocks in this box, their Brucius being the other one. That one is in the on-deck circle for tomorrow, although come to think of it, I should have drunk the Brucius first, and the Lentenbock tomorrow, since tomorrow is Easter Sunday. Still, you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube, or the beer back in the can, so there it is. Lentenbock was the second doppelbock I have enjoyed from Schilling, their Weinachtsbier being the first.

Schilling says:

Lentenbock pours a deep mahogany color and is characterized by layers of dark fruit, toffee, and baked bread on the palate. It’s marked by rich malt character and finishes smooth with light alcohol warming.

Schilling Lentenbock has an alcohol content of 8% by volume and I paid $7.49 for my pint can from Half Time. Schilling sells it on their website for $18 a 4-pack. My can has no freshness dating, but I drank it the day I got it.

Schilling Lentenbock pours to a dark mahogany color with a thick fluffy tan head and a nose of sweet sticky nutty Malt. Taking a sip the beer is medium in body, thick and chewy and toasty nutty. Notes of chocolate chip cookies and sweet melanoidins abound, but the beer finishes dry with grassy earthy bitterness.

A delightful doppelbock, my favorite style of beer, and one I would absolutely buy again.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
