Watch out, world. Georgia is about to have a lot more breweries. On September 1st of 2017, just a short week away as I type, The Peach State’s archaic beer laws will finally allow breweries to sell a single pint or two on premises and/or up to a case to go. Up until now, the legislature has only allowed the consumption of beer and beer to go with a paid tour, thanks to the stranglehold state distributors have on the legislature. Georgia was the last state in the nation to have such restrictive laws, and it’s about time we tossed them. This will allow Georgia’s small brewers to grow their business and grow their numbers.
This also means I can visit a small brewer like SBC (Southern Beer Company) in Athens, have a pint of a beer like their Watermelon Tart, and bring something else home for later. That’s still a week away, though, so for now I’ll just enjoy a mug of this tasty fruited Berliner Weisse at Taco Mac. For August of 2017, SBC is “Co-Brewery” of the Month, along with Omaha Brewing, also from Georgia. SBC Watermelon Tart is not mentioned on the brewery website, though a lot of other beers are. The only information I have on it is from Taco Mac, and of course my own taste buds.
Southern Brewing Company Watermelon Tart has an alcohol content of 4.5% by volume and I paid $7 for a 23-ounce mug, and that with a free logo glass. It was pint glass night. The Taco Mac descriptions says:
A wild-fermented beer containing funky sour flavors and a variety of aromas
My mug of Southern Brewing Company Watermelon Tart arrived a hazy pale-yellow color with a thick fluffy head and a potent sourness in the nose. Taking a sip I get a big wheaty palate with a hint of watermelon fruit, then a big tarty tart tartness and a puckering sour finish.
I think I would like a little more watermelon here, and a lower alcohol content to fit the style. Still, the sourness is unquestionably appropriate to a Berliner Weisse, and this was a very tasty beer I would love to have again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
