I’m not sure who came up with the idea of holding a homebrew competition with the prospect of commercial production for the winning entries, but it was a great one. Pete's Brewing held such a competition before Boston Beer’s Longshot competition, and the winner became their Wicked Winter Brew. Boston Beer’s Longshot featured two separate competitions yielding two runs of three beers each, unfortunately that seems to be the extent of the line, at least for the foreseeable future. A shame since Longshot beers have been decent to say the very least.
Longshot Bock is a pleasure to behold. This deep brown lager sports a thick, rocky head and has a deliciously malty nose. The palate is very smooth, sweet and malty with hints of molasses and deep roasted malt, almost porter-like. The Hallertau’s impart a grassy, bitter finish to this 1.062 OG, 30 IBU beer. Interestingly, the homebrew recipe for the beer printed on the bottom of the carton seems to simulate a double decoction, and as the BBC claims the bottled version is brewed to original specs, I assume it is decocted as well. A great brew created by Meleq Kacani and Rocky Hebert of Simi Valley, California.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
