Hopflake White IPA

Review Date 12/14/2016  Last Updated      By John Staradumsky

New for 2016 in the Samuel Adams Winter Classics 12-pack sampler is Samuel Adams Hopflake White IPA. Just what has happened to White IPAs anyway? The first (and best) ones that I ever had were a cross between IPA and Belgian-style witbiers. These days, they just seem to be IPAs with wheat malt. That’s mostly the case here, but Boston Beer also introduces a little lemongrass to the mix.

In the 2016 Samuel Adams Winter Classics pack you will get 2 bottles of Samuel Adams Hopflake White IPA, plus two bottles each of:

·         Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock

·         Samuel Adams Old Fezziwig

·         Samuel Adams Winter Lager

·         Samuel Adams Boston Lager

·         Samuel Adams Ginger Beer

From the website:

Light golden with a distinct floral and honey aroma, this wheat IPA is lively and bright. Bold, citrusy hops and a slightly sweet maltiness make this an easy-drinking yet full-flavored brew.

Ingredients, also from the website:

HOP VARIETIES: Chinook, Hallertau Mittelfrueh, Simcoe

MALT VARIETIES: Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend, White Wheat

SPECIAL INGREDIENTS: Lemongrass

Samuel Adams Hopflake White IPA has an alcohol content of 6% by volume with 55 IBUs. I paid $13.99 for the Winter Classics pack at Publix, and my bottles are notched as best before February 2017. This is the second “White IPA” I’ve tried from Boston Beer, the first being Samuel Adams Whitewater IPA. I preferred that beer to this one.

Samuel Adams Hopflake White IPA pours to more of an orange color with a thick foamy head and a resiny pine and herbal citrus nose. Taking a sip, the beer has light to medium malt up front followed by light resin, passion fruit and herbal citrusy lemongrass notes leading into a bitter grassy finish. Not really a white IPA in my book but decent enough. I like the way the lemongrass pops and is a bright spot on a cold rainy late fall day.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
