Today while I
was picking up a few groceries at the local Kroger store, I saw something
new: Samuel Adams Hefeweizen. Now wait just a minute, you say. A
wheat beer by Sam Adams? New? Certainly not. Ok, I grant you, that much is
true. Boston Beer has definitely put out their share of wheat beers in the
past. Just for fun, let’s run through them.

Update June 8th 2017: Recalled to Life. If you're a fan of English author Charles Dickens as I am, you'll recognize this famous theme from A Tale of Two Cities, one of my favorite novels of all time. Most notably, Dr. Manette is "recalled to life" when he is released from the Bastille. Like Dr. Manette, Samuel Adams has now recalled to life their hefeweizen, listed as a new beer in the 2017 American Summer Variety Pack. Really though, it's not.
This time around, Boston Beer says this
about the recalled Hefeweizen:
Brewed with a traditional German Weiss beer yeast, Sam Adams Hefeweizen has
a hazy golden appearance and smooth wheat character.
Hefeweizen, loosely translating to “wheat beer with yeast,” is a south
German style of beer. German tradition states a Hefeweizen must be made by
mixing at least 50% wheat to barley malt. The added yeast (“hefe”) gives the
beer its signature unfiltered, hazy appearance.
Ingredients from the website:
HOP VARIETIES Hallertau Mittelfrueh and Spalt-Spalter Noble hops
MALT VARIETIES Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend, White Wheat
YEAST German Weiss Beer Yeast W68
Samuel Adams Hefeweizen has an alcohol content of 5.4% by volume with 14 IBUs. The sampler containing two bottles of it runs as low as $13.29 in my area, but I received a sample bottle directly from Boston Beer. My bottle is notched as best before September of 2017.
Samuel Adams Hefeweizen pours to a slightly hazy blonde color with a thick rocky head and a luscious wheaty and clovey nose. I left a little in the bottle and didn’t see yeast but sipping, the beer is wonderfully tart yeasty with banana and clove and amazing crackery wheat flavor. Samuel Adams Hefeweizen finishes tart wheaty and crisp, very refreshing indeed. A perfect summer beer that refreshes with tasty notes of spice.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
