Hey Boston Beer! What did you do to my Samuel Adams Black Lager? That beer is only available sporadically, and I last enjoyed it back in the fall of 2017, when it seemed to me that it was better than it ever had been before. So, I was pretty excited to see a new beer, Samuel Adams Coffee Black Lager being rolled out in the Samuel Adams American Craft Lagers 12-pack.
You get 2 bottles of the Samuel Adams Coffee Black Lager in the 12-pack plus two bottles each of the following:
· Samuel Adams Smoked Lager
· Samuel Adams Fresh as Helles
The Kellerbier, Smoked Lager, and Coffee Black lager are “new”. I use quotes there because some may be variations on previous Samuel Adams beers. The Coffee Black Lager is not, however.

Samuel Adams Coffee Black Lager has an alcohol content of 4.9% by volume with 19 IBUs. The 12-pack ran me $14.99 at Kroger. My bottle is notched as best before May of 2018, although the 12-pack suggest you enjoy before April of 2018.
Samuel Adams Coffee Black Lager pours to a jet black color with a thick creamy head and a subtle coffee and roast nose. Taking a sip, the beer is thin in body and even a little watery, with light coffee and roast but nowhere near what I want and expect. None of the flavors grab me much here.
Too thin in body to support the light coffee is my final verdict, which disappoints because the last Black Lager I had was quite the opposite. I have another bottle and I will give it another go, but after that it is unlikely that I would buy this one again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
