Sacred Profane Pale Lager

Sacred Profane! From the great state of Maine! That’s what I’m talking about. Sacred Profane brewing is a company I’ve heard a lot about, but until recently I haven’t been able to snag their beers. That changed, though, when I got a can of first their Pale Lager and them the dark. Which pretty much completed my collection.

Why do I say that? Because Sacred Profane, unlike all those breweries today that make 50 milllion varitiites of hazy IPA and pastry stout, basically has two beers, and I just told you what they are. They also have two locations, both in Maine, in Biddeford and Portland. The next time I’m in Maine, the Portland location is on my radar. They do sell a classic pour but also as beer foam. I’ll confess I don’t get the attraction to beer foam. I want to drink a beer, not fight with it.

Anyway, Sacred Profane Pale Lager is in the Světlé Pivo style, or Czech Pale Lager. This is in the Pilsner family, though it is a little less hoppy. Sacred Profane’s version has an alcohol content of 4.2% by volume according to my can. I paid $4.49 for my 12-ounce can from Half Time. Total Wine in Natick, Massachusetts sells it for $28.99 a 12-pack. My can is stamped BB 9/14/24 COLD LAGER WARM HEARTS on the bottom.

Sacred Profane Pale Lager pours to a pale golden color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of soft bready malt. Taking a sip, the beer is crisp and fresh bready up front, quite malty indeed. It transitions to a bold earthy herbal hop bitterness that lingers long and dry with a grassy bitterness.

The juxtaposition of bitter earthy, but not overpowering, hops against fresh bready malt here is sublime. I can only imagine how wonderful this beer must be fresh on tap. One of these days I will get to Maine and find out.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
