Waaaay back in September of 2001, I moved to Rome, Georgia. Rome is a quaint little town (my wife grew up there) and we lived there for three and a half years before moving to Atlanta and later Canton. Rome has a charming little downtown full of an eclectic assortment of shops in old historic buildings. I always thought it would be a great place for a brewery.
In 2012, somebody else had the same idea, and Rome City Brewing was born. A brewpub restaurant, Rome City Brewing underwent a major expansion adding a bigger brewhouse in 2017. This has allowed them to sell kegs for offsite and soon will allow them to can their beer. I recently picked up a crowler of their Downtown Brown Ale at Stout’s Growlers here in Canton thanks to the expansion.
There is no information on the beer, but they do say this about their brewery on their website:
We actually got started in May 2009 just a few doors down at 333 Broad Street. 333 On Broad was a very neat place with the restaurant downstairs and the music and bar area upstairs.
In Sept 2012 we opened the doors here at the Brewhouse Music & Grill and quickly became the spot for live music, burgers, wings, and ribeyes. Not to mention college football! In Sept 2013 we said goodbye to 333 On Broad and combined staff and the menu into what you see today. The Brewhouse Music & Grill is your one stop for food, fun, and music!
Rome Brewing Downtown Brown has an alcohol content of 5% by volume and I paid $8.50 for my 32-ounce crowler.
Rome Brewing Downtown Brown pours to a chestnut brown color with a thick creamy head and a soft light nutty nose. Taking a sip, the beer has light nutty and chocolate chip cookie notes, to be frank less than I like in the style but they are pleasant and the beer is very drinkable. Finish is gently balanced with a soft bitter hop presence.
I would like more malty notes, but the beer pleases, and I would certainly buy it again. I will be on the lookout for more beers from Rome City Brewery, and a trip to the source is overdue as well.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
