Yellow Snow Pilsner Brewed with Alaskan Spruce Tips

Review Date 11/19/2020   By John Staradumsky

How does that old Frank Zappa song go? Watch out where the huskies go, and don’t you eat that yellow snow.. Sounds like sage advice to me, but ol’ frank didn’t say anything about drinking yellow snow. Of course, I don’t mean the kind of yellow snow Frank was referring to. Instead, I’m talking about Rogue Yellow Snow, a hoppy pale ale spiced up with the addition of juniper berries…..hey wait a minute! What happened to my Yellow Snow IPA? It’s not an IPA anymore! It’s a…pilsner!

That’s right friends, Rogue Yellow Snow is now a pilsner brewed with Alaskan spruce tips according to the can. I don’t know how long this has been the case, or if it was something else between being an IPA and a pilsner. I can say that my cans also say this:

Like a deep breath of fresh Northwest winter air, Yellow Snow is crisp and clean with a refreshing hint of spruce making this pils enjoyable time and time again.

Rogue Yellow Snow Pilsner Brewed with Alaskan Spruce Tips has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume with 19 IBUs. I paid….errrrr nothing for my Yellow Snow? It’s true! My daughter bought a six-pack and brought me four cans. She paid $12.49 at Total Wine, which seems a few bucks higher than it should be. My cans are stamped WANNA CHAT? Rogue Yellow Snow Pilsner Brewed with Alaskan Spruce Tips pours to a, well, cloudy yellow color with a thick fluffy white head and a soft gently woody spruce nose. Taking a sip, the beer is crisp biscuity malty up front. It’s gently infused with woody spruce notes and finishes dry with slightly piney notes. Very tasty, the spruce is gentle but the beer is infused with it and really brightens the whole affair quite nicely.

I enjoyed this beer very much and I am looking forward to enjoying more of it. I will confess I might like a tad more spruce, and that the price could be a little lower. Other than that, though, this is certainly a beer I will buy again. You still should, though, watch out where those huskies go.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
