So this was on tap at Taco Mac: Rogue Straight Outta Newport. And it is straight outta Newport, too. Newport Oregon, that is. Rogue describes Straight Outta Newport as The first-ever West Coast IPA from the Westest Coast brewery, although that all depends on how you define West Coast IPA. Classic resiny-piney-grapefruity American IPAs were once called West Coast IPA.

Rogue, however, refers to the modern fruit loopy tropical fruit IPAs that are thin on malt and heavy on hop aromas. This then is their first foray into that field, although it does have some elements of classic West Coast IPA, too.

Rogue says:

We set out to brew a huge West Coast IPA to satisfy the thirstiest hop heads. Bursting with Citra, Mosaic and Comet hops, Straight Outta Newport packs a wallop of citrus aromas and fruit flavors to create a beer unlike any other we've ever brewed.

This one is a bold, hoppy double IPA….Dedicated to the Oregon Coast, Rogue’s home and world headquarters, Rogue brewers were challenged to create a uniquely West Coast beer using Citra, Mosaic and Comet hops.

Rogue Straight Outta Newport has an alcohol content of 8.7% by volume with 73 IBUs. It is a January seasonal release. I paid 9 for an 11-ounce glass at Taco Mac and it runs 13.99 for 4 16-ounce cans at Total Wine.

My glass of Rogue Straight Outta Newport arrived a hazy orange in color with a medium head of foam and nothing but passion fruit in the nose. Taking a sip I got more of that in the palate atop a firm bodied maltiness with hints of caramel and richness from the candi sugar.  Citrusy lemon-lime, tangerine and grapefruit peel about with a hint of resin and a long dry lingering bitter finish.

A bit pricey folks, but very tasty indeed and a beer I would certainly buy again.
