Here's a beer that can't decide what to call itself. From Rogue's website:
MaierBock, historically a spring release, is part of
Rogue's Boch Collection, which includes Dead Guy Ale (a year round package),
Whale Ale, Wolf Eel Ale, and Spiny Lumpsucker (part of the Oregon Coast
Aquarium series.
What's missing here is the information that these are all the same
beer! That's right, they're all the same brew, packaged under different
labels. Rogue has been less than forthcoming about this in the past, though
they have admitted it. I don't have a problem with this as long as it is
made clear, however if the consumer thinks he's getting different beers, he
should indeed get them.
Another interesting point about this beer is that it's called a Mai-bock,
when in fact it's top fermented and thus an ale. Rogue has always indicated
this brew is fermented with their pac-man yeast however. Early bocks were
most likely ales, though now they are lagers.
Rogue Maierbock pours to a cloudy amber-brown color with subtle head
formation and a rich malty nose. The palate is chewy-malty, caramelly, with
a touch of chocolate and a nice bitter finish. This a tasty, satisfying ale
to be sure, but not a maibock. The Munich malt and Saaz hops don't make it
so.
I'm not a style Nazi, so I give the beer four stars because it tastes so
darned good. Try it yourself, I'm sure you'll agree.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
