Dead 'n' Dead Dead Guy Ale Aged in Dead Guy Whiskey Barrels

Review Date 4/20/2018  Last Updated 10/31/2019   By John Staradumsky

Here’s a variation on Rogue Dead Guy Ale that, well, is and isn’t a variation on Dead Guy Ale. I guess you can call it a variation since the malts and theme of Dead Guy Ale are preserved, though it is a bigger, stronger, bolder version of that beer. Then you take that beer and age it in Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey Barrels and voila! You have Rogue Dead ‘n’ Dead Dead Guy Ale Aged in Dead Guy Whiskey Barrels.

Yes, Rogue makes whiskey as well as beer, and they like to do things their own way, like growing their own barley and hops and even pumpkins. So naturally they would want to barrel age in their own barrels as well, right? Right.

From the website:

Aged in Dead Guy Whiskey Barrels, Dead N' Dead is the evolution of Dead Guy Ale. The barrels enhance the robust malt and hop profiles of original Dead Guy Ale. The ale soaks in hints of oak and whiskey while maturing over several months at the Rogue ocean aging room.

Ingredients, also from the website:

Ingredients: 2-Row, C15, Munich & Rogue Farms Dare™ and Risk™ Malts; Perle & Sterling Hops; Free Range Coastal Water & Pacman Yeast

Rogue Dead ‘n’ Dead Dead Guy Ale Aged in Dead Guy Whiskey Barrels has an alcohol content of 8.2% by volume; Dead Guy Ale has an alcohol content of 6.6% by contrast. I bought it at Target in October for $9.49 for the bomber. This is not the same beer as Rogue John John Ale Dead Guy Ale Aged in Dead Guy Whiskey Barrels, but it’s on the same idea.

Rogue Dead ‘n’ Dead Dead Guy Ale Aged in Dead Guy Whiskey Barrels pours to a deep orange amber color with a thick creamy head and a soft pasty malty nose. Where’s the booze? I find just a hint in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium body with chewy caramel and toffee malt notes laced with vanilla and lesser oak. Boozy whiskey is apparent too (there it is!) and the beer seems warmer in the finish than the ABV implies.

Tasty malt and whiskey notes here, folks. Rogue Dead ‘n’ Dead Dead Guy Ale Aged in Dead Guy Whiskey Barrels is a bigger, bolder Dead Guy with tasty accents from the barrel ageing, all at a decent price. Get some! Because you’re only dead once. Or, err, maybe twice.

Update 10/31/2019: Happy Halloween! Rogue Dead N Dead, Dead Guy Ale aged in Dead Guy Whiskey barrels on nitro pour at Taco Mac! Soft whiskey notes in the nose, smooth creamy palate with firm caramel, woody undertones, gentle whisky notes, warming alcohol finish. Very nice! $7.50 for an 11-ounce glass is what I paid.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
