Fad alert! Are we on to another one? “New England IPAs” (hazy and juicy) are still pretty darned popular, but now I’m starting to see “sour” New England IPAs. I think I’ve seen 3 now, the first of them being Red Brick Airbrush Daydream. They call that one a “Myrtle Beach IPA”, though I’m not sure why: Red Brick is in Atlanta. Nobody else seems to be using that moniker. Anyway, today I’m here to tell you about another: Rogue Combat Wombat.
Rogue calls their Combat Wombat a Sour Northeast-style IPA with Blood Orange and Grapefruit. So, a New England IPA that is hazy and juicy (this time with real fruit added). Oh and sour.
Rogue says:
Weird & wonderful fusion of hazy IPA and sour ale brewed with grapefruit and blood orange, then dry-hopped with Australian hops.
Ingredients: 2-row & Acidulated Malts; Wheat, Oats, Lactose; Grapefruit, Blood Orange; Citra, BRU-1, Vic Secret & Galaxy Hops; Imperial Barbarian Yeast and Free Range Coastal Water.
Rogue
Ales are featured as beer of the month this July, and that means you get a
free logo glass with a purchase on Thursday nights. I enjoyed Rogue Combat
Wombat on the second Thursday of the month. It was running $6.50 a pint, and
Total Wine sells it for $7.99 for a 22-ounce bottle. Because I am a Taco Mac
Chancellor, I got a 23-ounce mug for $6.80, so this beer is actually a
better buy on tap than in the bottle. It has an alcohol content of 7.2% by
volume with 49 IBUs and Rogue says it is a July to October seasonal.
My mug of Rogue Combat Wombat arrived a hazy orange amber color with a fluffy white head and a very tart citrusy nose. Taking a sip I got tropical mango and orange-grapefruit citrus, light malt, a quite sour finish, and a hint of grassy hops. Tangy orange juice came to mind as the beer progressed.
This is tasty and very refreshing. The sour notes work well with the juicy citrus fruit to make this an appealing warm weather treat. It was more sour than the Airbrush Daydream, and fruitier too. I’ll be looking for Combat Wombat again. You’re on to something here, Rogue.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
