Cherry Choctabulous Milk Stout with Natural Cherry and Chocolate Flavors

Review Date 2/1/2020 By John Staradumsky

I finally found Rogue Cherry Choctabulous Milk Stout with Natural Cherry and Chocolate Flavors! I saw pictures of it, you see, in that most sacred of Facebook beer groups, Honest Craft Beer Reviews, and I really wanted to try it. I’ve been a big fan of Rogue Ales pretty much since there have been Rogue Ales, and drank lots of their beers in Rhode Island in the 90s.

When I moved to Georgia in 2001, the craft beer scene was nowhere near as vibrant as the one I left behind in New England. Still and all, there were Rogue Ales here, and I was glad for that. So, we’ve established my affinity for Rogue. We know I wanted to try Cheery Choctabulous. Problem was, I could not find it.

Several trips to area liquor stores and monitoring of the Total Wine website yielded no results. Then a strange thing happened. It was Thursday, January 300th of 2020, and that meant it was Taco Mac night. I logged into their website to check the beers at my local Canton Taco Mac to see what I might like to enjoy this evening. No beers came up! I check the app as well. No beers came up! On a whim, to see if other locations were also wonky, I pulled up Woodtsock. And then I saw it…Rogue Cherry Choctabulous on tap! Woodstock Taco Mac it would be that night.

Rogue says:

Like a cherry cordial, Cherry Choctabulous opens up gushing with luscious cherry aroma and flavor that quickly gives way to indulgent notes of rich dark chocolate. A delicious treat any time of year but we particularly enjoy it on a crisp winter evening. Sweet aromas of chocolate and cherry are prevalent on the nose, the initial hit of cherry gives way to dark chocolate that fills out the mid palate, finishing with one last blast of cherry before ultimately resigning with the slightly bitter lingering bite of the dark chocolate.

They list these ingredients:

Ingredients: 2-Row, Brumalt, C-75 & Chocolate Malts; Roasted Barley, Rolled Oats, Lactose, Chocolate, Vanilla, Cherries; Rogue Farms grown Cascade Hops; Pacman Yeast & Free Range Coastal Water.

Rogue Cherry Choctabulous has an alcohol content of 8.4% by volume with 30 IBUs. I paid $7.51 for my 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac, and it runs $7.49 for a 22 ounce bomber at Total Wine in South Carolina. I actually paid 2 cents more and got an extra ounce for draft over bottle. This is a November to February seasonal brew.

My glass of Rogue Cherry Choctabulous Milk Stout with Natural Cherry and Chocolate Flavors arrived dark black in color, not opaque, but with a slight cherry red tint in the light. Chocolate and a hint of cherry are apparent in the nose, and I got a smooth milk chocolaty palate with a slightly thinner body than I expected when I sipped. There is still enough to support the chocolate and the bright cherry that pops against it and it’s a little creamy, too. The beer finishes with gentle balancing roast.

A chocolate cherry cordial candy in a glass, perfect for Christmas and Valentines imbibing. Rogue Cherry Choctabulous was worth the hunt, and I’ll be on the lookout for it again.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
