Rodenbach has a new beer! It’s called Rodenbach Fruitage, and it’s designed to be an easy drinking, refreshing fruit beer from this iconic Belgian brewer. Rodenbach Fruitage is also the very first Rodenbach beer to be sold in cans in The United States, although I didn’t drink it that way. My first glimpse was at my local Taco Mac, on tap.
So what is Rodenbach Fruitage, and what fruits were harmed in the making of this beer? I’ll let Rodenbach explain.
RODENBACH Fruitage gets its name from aged-old brewing techniques, combined with fruit infusions. It's an instant classic – comprised of 25% authentically aged RODENBACH (2-year matured beer from oak standing Foeders) blended with 75% young RODENBACH ale, with added fruit of cherries and elderberries.
When I saw Rodenbach Fruitage on the draft list at Taco Mac I thought, well, this looks interesting. Then I got scared. The price was listed as ASK. That was not a good sign, considering I have seen Evil Twin Even More Jesus at $14 for 11-ounces and Huyghes La Guillotine at $13.50 for the same amount here. Happily, Fruitage was nowhere near that expensive, running $7.75 for 11-ounces. I have not seen it in the 4-packs of 8.5-ounce cans yet, but Rodenbach has set a suggest price of $6.99 for those. It has an alcohol content of 4.2% by volume.
My glass of Rodenbach Fruitage arrived a reddish purple in color with a large pink frothy head and a tart, sour nose full of cherry. Sipping, the palate is even more tart and sour with hints of the exotic elderberry and dry almonds. There is a pleasing creaminess and a puckering tart dry sour finish. A beautiful beer indeed, it may be 25% aged on oak and 75% young, but it is 100 % delicious.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
