Founders Ale

Review Date 7/20/2021 By John Staradumsky

Father’s Day 2021! And what a great one it was. I had had my grandson, Neil, over since Friday night (he’s 7, will be 8 next month), and we had a ball together. My son Nathan was working, but he was off at 2 on Father’s Day proper and came by so we could go on a pub crawl. A mini pub crawl if you will (a brewery and then Taco Mac), but I was excited all the same! A few stops are all you need when you are with family.

The first stop on our agenda was RockSolid Brewing Company in downtown Ball Ground, Georgia. RockSolid opened its doors in December of 2020, while Covid was raging across the country. I became fully vaccinated as of April 30th, and they went on my list of breweries to try. Ball Ground is only about 12 miles north of me, so they were now a local.

RockSolid is a brewery, not a brewpub, and they do not serve food, although there are plenty of restaurants around including a German deli across the street. They serve beer for on premises drinking and in crowlers to go, as well as soft drinks. They are family and pet friendly, and have games to keep the kids occupied. Neil definitely recommends the games here.

I went with a sampler to start out, then ordered a pint, and got a crowler to go. The fourth beer that I tried here (last in my sampler) was Founder's Ale, a hoppy American Pale Ale with wheat. Here’s what RockSolid says about the beer:

Don't call it a wheat beer! Brewed with over 50% wheat to provide a full mouthfeel and mild toasty notes. We then used a heavy handed combination of Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Amarillo, Tettnanger, and Willamette hops to provide a pleasant blend of tangerine, pine, and grapefruit flavors.

My 4-ounce sample was $2.50 (I got a flight of four beers for $10 you see), a 10-ounce pour will run you $4.50, a pint $6.50, and a crowler $13. The beer has an alcohol content of 5.3% by volume with 27 IBUs.

My sample of RockSolid Founders Ale arrived a pale yellow color witha tight white cap of foam and an inviting hoppy nose. Taking a siup, the beer has a medium body somewhat lightened by the wheat. This is a hop delight with all 4Cs, Amarillo, Tettnang, and Willamettes. Citrus grapefruit, resin, earthy grassy hops, long dry bitterness. Very tasty! I will be ordering a pint of this next time.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
