You can say this for the RJ Rockers brewery of Spartanburg, South Carolina. They know how to do fruit beers. Witness RJ Rockers Son of a Peach, what I think of as one of the best and most refreshing domestic fruit beers that you can buy. Now, that absolute treat for the summer heat has a new sister brew in the form of RJ Rockers Strawberry Bomber, a beer I tried on tap at Taco Mac recently.
RJ Rockers Strawberry bomber is also available in bottles, though I haven’t seen it that way yet. It’s a newly released brew for 2014, although it also seems to ber a rebranding of their Strawbeery Wheat Ale . Since I’ve never had that one, it’s still new to me. As is the norm for most fruit beers it’s based on a bed of wheat and barley malts. Here’s what the brewery says about this beer on their website:
“the perfect compliment (sic) to a hot summer day. At its core is a lightly hopped wheat ale but with over 100lbs of local (Strawberry Hill) strawberries, it becomes the summer beer that many have been waiting for since the creation of its Peachy cousin.”
RJ Rockers Strawberry Bomber has an alcohol content of 5.8% by volume, and I paid $6.00 for a mug at Taco Mac.
RJ Rockers Strawberry Bomber pours to a pale straw color with a light head formation and the appetizing aroma of fresh picked strawberries in the nose. Taking a sip, the palate here is very smooth, with an almost creamy maltiness and lost of fresh berry flavor. This one seems more barley malty than crackery wheaty, though the creamy fruitiness of the strawberries might account for part of that. The beer has just the right amount of bitterness in the finish and is not at all cloying or sweet. It truly captures the essence of fresh strawberries.
They nailed this one folks, this is a wonderfully refreshing beer for summer. Don’t miss it!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
