You say you don’t like fruit beers? I say you like fruit beers. You just haven’t tried the right fruit beers. Case in point: RJ Rockers Son of a Peach, which in my estimation is one of the very best fruit beers in the world. It’s a beer I’ve long enjoyed at home in the bottle and just enjoyed at Taco Mac fresh on draft, which may well be the best way to enjoy this one. Incredibly fresh, like a bite of ripe fruit you’ve just plucked from the tree. The key to a successful fruit beer for me is fresh fruit flavor and balance. The beer should use real fruit or fruit puree, and it needs to be well attenuated and have just the right amount of hop bitterness in the finish to balance, but not overpower, rendering the beer refreshing and not cloying or overly sweet. This is exactly how RJ Rockers Son of a Peach tastes to me. This year-round favorite is perfectly suited to hot weather, but I enjoy it in fall, winter, and spring as well. Peaches are a huge crop here in Georgia (the peach state) as well as South Carolina, home states of RJ Rockers. Both states maintain they have the best tasting peaches, but there’s no doubt in my mind that South Carolina has the best tasting peach beer. RJ Rockers Son of a Peach has an alcohol content of 6% by volume and 16 IBUs. The alcohol is up slightly over the old level of 5.8% from a bottle I bought a few years ago. RJ Rockers also does a Peachy King version of this beer, an imperial fruit beer. Son of a Peach runs $8.99 a six-pack here in Georgia, and I paid $6 for a pint at Taco Mac. My mug of RJ Rockers Son of a Peach arrived a beautiful amber color with a thick rocky head formation and a nose simply bursting with fresh juicy peach aroma. The palate stacks that juicy, sweet, luscious peach flavor on top of crisp tart wheat and remarkably balances it all out in the finish with grassy bitter hops. RJ Rockers Son of a Peach is a lot like biting a fresh peach with a hop cone for a pit. Just the right amount of bitter, lightly aromatic hops here to make their presence known but don’t crowd out the fruit. As I said, one of the best fruit beers I have ever had.
