So, what do you think of those chocolate peanut butter porters everybody is cranking out these days? Well not everybody, mind you, but a lot of brewers. I like them well enough when they work, though when they do for me they come off tasting more like a Mary Jane’s candy than a Reese’s cup, though you do get that, too.
Anyway, the last couple of such beers have not worked so well for me. One, to be fair, was a peanut butter and jelly beer from Catawba in North Carolina, Peanut Butter Jelly Time was the name. The second is a bottle of beer I’m pondering on today, Kerry’s Peanut Butter Porter from the River Rat brewery of South Carolina. This is my first beer from River Rat.
Currently, there is no information on this beer on the brewery website. The beer iss till available at Total Wine in South Carolina, however.
From the label:
Where the Saluda and Broad rivers merge, they form the mighty Congaree in ColaTown, SC! River Rat Brewery was founded in 2013. Toast brown and robust, this Porter is blended with dried peanut butter for that smooth nutty taste. The roasted deep flavor compliments pork, brisket and of course peanut butter cups and dessert. “We love brewing craft beer because beer makes people happy.”-King Rat Daddy.
River Rat Kerry’s Peanut Butter Porter has an alcohol content of 6% by volume and runs a ridiculous $14.99 a six-pack in cans.
River Rat Kerry’s Peanut Butter Porter pours to a very dark brownish to black color with a very thick fluffy rocky head and a bit of chocolate in the nose. My bottle was a gusher, and it took a while to decant it due to the towering head formation on a gentle pour. Taking a sip, the beer is thin bodied for a porter, and I get the chocolate and a hint of nutty peanut notes, but they’re too light and the thin body makes their lightness stand out like a sore thumb. Finishes with a roasty bitter balance.
On its own merits, I would give this one 2 stars as I am not at all impressed. It’s just too thin in body and the flavors are too light. Add the gusher bottle and the ridiculous price and I just can’t recommend this one at all.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
