Leafy Greens IPA

Review Date 7/09/2020   By John Staradumsky

Oh! Oh! New brewery alert! For me anyway. I had heard a lot of good things about the Revision Brewing Company of Sparks, Nevada. The problem was that their beers are not sold here in Georgia, but, no worries! You can get them online from craftshack.com, so I added a can of Revision Leafy Greens India Pale Ale to one of my most recent orders. According to the brewery website, Revision was founded in 2015 when brewmaster Jeremy Warren left Knee Deep Brewing (I like Knee Deep Brewing!) to join four other entrepreneurs. Originally, they had intended to locate in West Sacramento, California, but that decision panned out and so Sparks it was.

Revision shipped its first beer to the retail market in 2017, and the rest is history. Last year in May, I was in Laughlin, Nevada on vacation, but did not come across any of their beers. After enjoying Leafing Greens as much as I did, I wondered, did I miss the boat by not making a side trip to Revision then? A quick query on Bing maps revealed the two are more than 500 miles apart; clearly, such would not have been practical.

What does Revision say about Leafy Greens?

Dig the dab-alicious. Savor the stank. Leafy greens presents an increase by orders of magnitude in dab-aliciousness. Certain hops, particularly CTZ, are known for their familiar, pungent aroma. Scientific examination has proven that Humulus lupulus is a member of the Cannabaceae family, which may explain it’s dab-alicious aromas and flavors. Ponder these branches of the family tree while enjoying this mellow IPA with friends, music, solid visuals and readily-available munchies.

What the hell was dab-alicious, I wondered? A Bing search indicated a cycling reference from the Urban Dictionary. I did get a hot for “dabblicious”, which is term related to resiny cannabis aromas and flavors. Hey Revision, you’re missing a b there! I loved the beer, though, so I forgive you.

Revision Leafy Greens India Pale Ale has an alcohol content of 7.25% with 55 IBUs. I paid $4.49 for a can from craftshack, and Total Wine sells it (but not in Georgia) for $12.99 a six-pack.

Revision Leafy Greens India Pale Ale pours to a hazy yellow color with a thick fluffy white head and a dank, herbal earthy green nose. Taking a sip, the beer was not at all what I expected. It has a medium body up front, but then waves of very vegetal, earthy, “dank” green herbal notes wash over the palate. Fresh (not canned) spinach comes to mind, earthy fuggles style hops, cannabis, and a bitter (but not hugely bitter) green finish.

A very different beer indeed! 4 stars with another half tacked on for originality.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
