Pancakes smothered in maple syrup! Who doesn’t love that for breakfast? I know I do, but I’ll confess that these days when I eat breakfast its high protein, not high carb. Still, I do love my pancakes, and so was ever so happy to see a can of Renegade Pancakes Maple Porter from my good buddy Dale Roberts.
I’ve had a few beers already from Denver’s Renegade and always been impressed. Pancakes Maple Porter is no exception as we shall soon see. Theme beers can be tricky, because to make me happy you really need to give the impression of the “theme” you’re setting forth. Renegade does that here, and does it well indeed.
From the website:
This dark and roasty porter is balanced perfectly with notes of maple in both aroma and flavor. It satisfies that maple craving without being sweet. This beer is a great fall alternative to the pumpkin beers.
Ingredients, also from the website:
Malt: 2-row, C-55, Chocolate, Biscuit, Roasted Barley
Hops: Mt. Hood, Fuggle
Additions: Maple Extract
Renegade Pancakes Maple Porter has an alcohol content of 6% by volume. This is a seasonal beer Renegade says is available September through March. Quite a long season.
Renegade Pancakes Maple Porter pours to a jet-black color with a medium sized head of creamy tan foam and a luscious sweet real maple nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium body with hints of caramel. It’s a little buttery, and that helps form an image of chocolate chip pancakes smothered in maple syrup and butter in my mind. The beer finishes refreshing and nicely balanced with a gentle, subtle grassy bitter buzz.
Delicious! They really pulled this off nicely, and delivered the promised impression. Renegade Pancakes Maple Porter is a beer worth hunting down. If I can’t eat my pancakes anymore, at least I can drink them.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
