For the month of August 2015, Taco Mac repeated a strategy they employed earlier in the year for their featured beers of the month. That is, instead of highlighting one brewery for the month, they instead offered specialty beers from three small Georgia brewers: Jailhouse, Cherry Street, and Reformation. While the beers of these three brewers are often found on tap at one of the many Georgia Taco Mac locations, focusing on them for beer of the month gave them lots of attention as beer enthusiasts could enjoy any of their beers on Thursday nights and get a free logo glass with purchase.
The three brewers went in on one collaboration beer, Independence Saison, and offered up a beer each as well: Jailhouse Alibi Cream Ale, Cherry Street Rivers Up White Water IPA, and for Reformation, Union Wit. All had input on Independence, though it was actually brewed at Reformation which is located about ten miles from my home. Union Wit is a regular offering from reformation. Here’s what they say about it on their website:
“In a space drunk on reinventing the wheel, Union is a restoration of the beauty of the style.” –CEO, Spencer Nix.
Union is about relationships. Created for that moment when a stranger becomes a friend. When the fear of judgment becomes the freedom to become known. Union is belgian style white ale you can pull up chair and spend some quality time around–with and for those who matter.
Come sit a while. Celebrate what we hold in common.
Reformation Union Wit has an alcohol content of 4.8% by volume and I paid a reasonable $6 for a full mug pour. I got a free Independence logo glass with my purchase. The beer is only sold on tap that I have seen, though I’ve recently seen other Reformation beers in bomber bottles and they expect to release Union Wit in cans early next year.
My mug of Reformation Union Wit arrived a slightly cloudy yellow color with a minimal head of filmy foam and potent coriander and citrus in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has tart wheat up front with loads of coriander spice, bitter citrus lemon-orange and pungent grains of paradise. There’s a big hit of very tart wheats in the finish, too.
Witbier is a style I enjoy in the warm weather, but it’s not my favorite style. Reformation Union, however, really wowed me. It’s an exceptional witbier, and one of the better examples of the style I’ve had for some time. I would certainly buy this beer again, and will be on the lookout for it in cans.
Update 6/5/2017: Reformation Union Wit, my local brewery 9 miles from here. Beautiful Belgian Wit and what better to become Chancellor with? The beer has gone up $.25 to $6.25 but this is Brewniversity credit 1000, so all future "normal gravity" brews now come in this 23 ounce mug. Plus $100 gift card and a party. Isn't that neat? Now, you're probably thinking but Bruguru, how do you get a credit for a beer you've already had at Taco Mac? Simple, it was a special Beer of the Month credit last time around. Anyway, I enjoyed becoming a chancellor with a delicious plate of wings to go with my beer, and did I mention my daughter now works at Taco Mac?
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
