Rey Double IPA

Review Date  12/22/2019  By John Staradumsky

So there I was at Taco Mac on Thursday night, December 19th of 2019. You might ask, “What’s so new about that broo-goo-roo?”, and in and of itself, you would be right. The date is important you see, because the next day was the release of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, and we had tickets. You might ask, “What’s that got to do with beer broo-goo-roo?”, and in and of itself, you would be right. Except, of course, that Taco Mac had Reformation Rey Double IPA on tap, so of course you know that I ordered one.

Reformation Rey Double IPA is the brewery’s tribute to (and maybe attempt to cash in on just a little) the last movie in the Skywalker trilogy of trilogies. They say:

No true nerd could resist the pull of such a powerful moment in the universe. Drawn to a galaxy far far away from early childhood, the magic of vagabonds turned victors of their fate is one woven into our hearts.

They list these ingredients:

Brewed with oats and the dynamic duo of Mosaic and Simcoe hops

The beer is available in draft form and in cans at the brewery and some retail locations. The alcohol content is a force to be reckoned with at 9.4% by volume. I paid $6 for an 11-ounce draft glass, which is not too bad after all. You could call it an Imperial IPA if you like, but then it would have to be Palpatine instead of Rey.

My glass of Reformation Rey Double IPA arrived bright orange in color with a tight light cap of foam and tropical pineapple and stone fruits in the nose. Taking a sip, I got light malt, pineapple and passion fruit, robust citrus, and a warming alcohol finish.

A tasty beer indeed, and I like the way the tropical mosaics and citrusy simcoes battle it out for dominance like the dark and light sides of the force. In the end, they are tied together nicely just like that mystic supernatural power. Would Galaxy hops have been apropos? It seems Reformation decided to keep them far, far away.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
