Well, there it is! I’m a Taco Mac Brewniversity Professor! I hit this milestone during Atlanta Beer Week when I ordered up a glass of Reformation Providence Reunited Belgian Tripel. I suppose it’s apropos that I did, since Atlanta Beer Week is a celebration of Georgia beer, and Taco Mac is a Georgia original, and Reformation is a scant 10 miles or so from me.
If you’re not familiar with the Taco Mac’s Brewinveristy program, it works like this. Basically, you get credits for each new beer you try, either on tap (each location has at least 100 taps) or in the bottle. If you really like a beer, you can get a credit for bottle and draft of the same beer. And you get rewards at various levels. A free T-Shirt after just 13 beers is only the beginning. The most important is Brewniversity Bachelors at 125, which gives you a 20-ounce mug of most beers at no extra charge.
Anyway, I hit Professor (575 different beers) on October 23, 2014. Here’s the thing, though, although I’ve been drinking different beers since the mid-eighties (I’m moving in on 5000 different ones tried), I only started going to Taco Mac when we bought our home in Canton in 2010. March 14th, 2010 was my official first credit at Taco Mac, making my average about 2.4 beers a week here. Too low, I think. I need to work on that. In case you were wondering, I got a set of engraved Brewniversity coasters for hitting 575, which you can see below. Now on the Dean at 750!
Didn’t I mention a beer? Oh yes, the very delightful Reformation Providence Reunited Belgian Tripel. As I mentioned, this brewery is but a stone’s throw from me and they put out several beers right now. I am sure there repertoire is sure to grow as they do (they’re only a few years old right now). Here’s what they say about Providence:
Providence is handcrafted as a belgian tripel. Deep gold in color, its aroma and flavor are complex with estery sweet and citrus finish which is largely produced during the marvel of fermentation and then dry hopped.
Currently, Reformation Providence Tripel is draft only, but in Georgia that is not as limiting as one might think. Multitap draft emporiums and growler shops abound here, making the market for draft beer a large one indeed. Providence has an alcohol content of 9.2% by volume, so even if you have your Brewniversity mug this one comes in an 11-ounce glass. At just $5.75 (how fitting is that) that does not seem unbearable.
My glass of Reformation Providence Reunited Belgian Tripel arrived a beautiful golden color with light crisp malt in the nose. A gentle pull revealed pineapple fruit and spice along with funky yeast and biscuit malt in the palate. There’s drying spice and light hop bitterness in the finish. I found Reformation Providence to be quite delicious, perhaps a bit more restrained and subtle than other examples of the style, but tasty nonetheless.
Maybe it will be in bottles in time for me to hit Chancellor at 1000 beers……
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
