Polar Express Winter Warmer

Review Date  1/31/2020  By John Staradumsky

Here we grow again! Reformation Brewery, originally of Woodstock, Georgia and recently of Canton has now opened a third location in Smyrna. I used to live in Vinings actually, right next door to Smyrna, so I’m eager to check the new location out, but for now I’m happy to be enjoying beers at my local Canton brewery.

Or, I was drinking beer there anyway. I dropped by and enjoyed a sampler of beers and filled my growler with Reformation Polar Express, a winter warmer. They have this beer listed under the Malty and Dark category, so it wasn’t even a contest as to what I was taking home in my Drink Tank growler. I love malty and dark, and I love winter warmers. No brainer! You might think January is a little late for a winter warmer, but hey, it’s still winter, right? Let’s make it warmer.

Reformation says:

Seasonal ale perfect for the holiday season. Dark and malty grain profile with hints of dried fruits, toasted gingerbread and festive spices.

Reformation Polar Express has an alcohol content of 7.2% by volume. I paid $12 for a 64-ounce growler fill at the brewery, which is, I think, the only place you can get this. You can get a 4-ounce glass there for $2.50 or a 12-ounce one for $5.50.

Reformation Polar Express pours to a dark brownish color with a thick creamy tan head and an irresistible gingerbread nose. Taking a sip, the beer is rich and satisfying in the smooth lush mouthfeel with firm gingerbread cookie/ginger snap notes of spicy ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Finishes gently warm with alcohol and dry with spice.

What a wonderful beer, really and truly a delicious gingerbread cookie in a glass. After I finish this growler, I might just go back for more. It’s that good!

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
