Reformation is the featured brewery of the month this November at Taco Mac! That works for me because they’re one of my favorite Georgia breweries, and the closest to me at about 8 or 9 miles away. So, it was nice to enjoy a mug of their Loki Lager at the Canton Taco Mac. And just like that mischievous god from Norse mythology, Reformation tricked me a bit with this beer which they call an “American Lager.”
Of course, when I think American lager I think BudMilloors. Don’t you? Being a fan of Norse mythology (and avid reader of Thor comic books), I was intrigued by the name even before I set foot in Taco mac to try the beer. I found this on the Reformation website:
We’re the featured beer of the month this November at Taco Mac locations across Georgia and Chattanooga, with four delicious offerings on tap, including a crisp American lager called Loki, and a winning homebrew recipe from the 2017 Southern Home Brewers Competition put on by Taco Mac. Stop by and get a taste at a tap near you, and join us for a special release of Loki from our Keeping Room!
See? American Lager. I know the beer has an alcohol content of 4.7% by volume, and I paid $6.25 for my 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac. But hey, I’m a Chancellor. You might get a pint if you don’t come here a lot like I do. Anyway, I put my nose to my beer when it arrived before me, all golden in color with a medium bit of fluffy head. I immediately exclaimed “This is no American lager!” (I think it’s more of an IPL). That crazy Loki. He sure had me going.
What I did get was a nose full of citrusy and herbal hops. Taking a sip, the beer was smooth malty and clean with a vibrant lemongrass character and a long dry bitter finish. I’m thinking some Germanic hops here imparting the bitterness and herbal character, and some American ones for the citrus. I e-mailed the brewery. I’ll get back to you later.
Oh, and I also got a neat Reformation Cadence beer glass. It stacks with the other 4 you can get on Thursdays this month to show a Reformation logo. Now there goes that Loki again. He just tricked me into four more return trips to Taco Mac this month.
Update 11/9/2017: OK, as promised, I'm back! I didn't get an e-mail reply from Reformation, but I did run into Spencer from the brewery at Taco Mac tonight. He had to check, but got back to me before we left: Citra hops are used here. I was pretty much on the mark with my German hops theory, since Citra is a descendant of Tettnag, Hallertau, and East Kent Golding. It does explain the lemongrass too. Yay me!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
