Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter

Review Date 10/29/2014   Last Updated 10/31/2020   By John Staradumsky

Last year, I was hearing all kinds of things about Redhook Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter. Some folks liked it, andsome didn’t. That’s the case with most things, and I wanted to try the beer myself. I’m not a fan of crowd-sourced beer review websites, preferring to go by the reviews of several trusted reviewers I favor. If you get to know a reviewer and see their likes and dislikes and see that they as a rule review to style, you can match your preferences to theirs and get a sense of how likely you are to be in agreement with their take on a beer. Hopefully, this works for you dear reader with the ruminations expounded here on Bruguru.com.

Anyway, and for whatever reason, we never got any Redhook Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter here in Georgia last year. Or if we did, it flew off the shelves before I could find any. This year again, sightings of this beer were very scarce indeed, although I did finally find it at Total Wine.

Here’s how Redhook describes the beer on their website:

Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter is dark chestnut brown in color and is made with pureed pumpkin. Cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger are added to the whirlpool and maple syrup is added during fermentation. This full-bodied, rich roasty porter makes you want to eat turkey and watch football, or build a bonfire.

Redhook Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter has an alcohol content of 5.8% by volume and my sample says it was bottles on July 31st of 2014. I do really like these cool stubby bottles, too. For what that’s worth. Plus you can get six of them for just $8.99. I know this only because I asked at Total Wine. There were no six-packs left, only a few single bottles.

Redhook Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter pours to a jet black color with a thick towering head of rocky tan foam and a deliciously spicy nose of robust hot ball cinnamon candy. Taking a sip, I get more of the spice up front, the cinnamon, and then some drying nutmeg along with a bit of squashy pumpkin flavor, subtle spicy ginger, a bold licorice bite, and a balancing roasty bitterness.

My verdict: this is excellent, lots of real pumpkin flavor and spice while retaining a porter character, all for a mere $8.99. I am impressed indeed, especially with the way the dark roasty malt and traditional pumpkin ale flavors all gel here. A beer I will certainly buy again, if I can find it.

Update 10/31/2020: What's Halloween without a pumpkin ale? here's one from beyond the grave. Bottled on July 24 15. Out of Your Gourd was a favorite, do they still make it? I don't think so. After five years it is amazing with roasty notes, licorice, pumpkin, nutmeg and a dry finish. Delightful!

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
