Red Hare Watermelon Wheat Ale

Welcome, my friends, to what I like to call a “historical beer review”. That’s because not only is the beer I am about to speak of, Red Hare Watermelon Wheat Ale, no longer available, but the brewery has also closed. Red Hare went out of business last year, which I recently learned while planning a visit there. They opened in Marietta in 2011, opened a second location in Shallotte, North Carolina in 2018, and a second Marietta location on The Square in 2020. The latter was the last to shut its doors last year.

I drank a lot of Red Hare beers over the year, and it was devastating indeed to learn of their demise. I bought a six-pack of the Watermelon Wheat at the brewery in June of 2022 and drank a can shortly after. I neglected to take tasting notes then.

Untappd quotes Red Hare as saying the following about the Watermelon Wheat Ale:

Malted and flaked wheat, Vienna, and Red-X malts.

Red Hare Watermelon Wheat Ale has an alcohol content of 5.25% by volume. I have no idea what I paid for my six-pack. My cans are stamped BEST BY SEP 1 2022.

Red Hare Watermelon Wheat Ale at five years pours to a hazy orange color with a thick but short lived fluffy white head and a nose of ripe watermelon fruit. Taking a sip the beer is very tart and fruity up front, then becomes very sour in the finish.

This beer has aged surprisingly well and was perfect for an 85 degree day. It’s not fair to rate it after 5 years, so I will go with the original 3.5 I gave it when I first tried it and posted it to Untappd a few weeks after buying at the brewery.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
