How many lives has Red Brick Thick Silky Double Chocolate Oatmeal Porter had? You tell me. My first experience with the beer was with its incarnation as Red Brick Winter Brew in 2005, the first year as I recall that it was released as a Double Chocolate Oatmeal Porter. That beer had an alcohol content of 8.2% by volume and was absolutely wonderful.
If I’m not mistaken, the beer was released in its own right a few years later when Red Brick Winter Brew became a Belgian-styled dubbel. And now it’s back again as Red Brick Thick Silky Double Chocolate Oatmeal Porter, a fall seasonal sold in 22-ounce bomber bottles. Here’s what the brewery says about this beer on the label:
All you suckas gather 'round, a brand new dude is coming to town! Thick Silky is a man with a plan and a Kung Fu backhand, you dig? He runs the chocolate game in this city, and when it comes to haters he shows no pity. With his fine, foxy ladies sitting pretty in a tricked out '73 Cadillac DeVille, he's down with the double chocolate oatmeal scene and keeping it real. So, if you crave satisfaction, Thick Silky is the man who's got that action!
Think
Shaft meets Willy Wonka and you have an idea what the label theme seems to
be for Red Brick Thick Silky Double Chocolate Oatmeal Porter.
Red Brick Thick Silky Double Chocolate Oatmeal Porter has an alcohol content of 7.7% by volume with 65 IBUs. I paid $7.99 for the 22-ounce bomber bottle. My bottle was packaged on 9/24/14 and I drank it on June 29th of 2015, so it had about 8 months of age on it.
Red Brick Thick Silky Double Chocolate Oatmeal Porter pours to a very dark brown (not really black or opaque) color with a moderate sized head of creamy tan foam and a soft powdered cocoa nose. Thick layers of Brussels lace cling to the sides of my glass and follow the liquid all the way to the bottom.
Taking a sip, the beer has a medium body with rich notes of roasty chocolate, toasted nuts and cocoa. A bit of light shines through as I hold this to a lamp. I do get a lot of harsh chocolate notes and just a bit of smooth oatmeal notes, but this beer has a lot less body than the Red Brick Winter Brew of the past.
Thick Silky finishes dry roasty bitter in the finish with a long dry herbal bitter finish. It has very good notes of chocolate and oatmeal, and again I think with a bit more body this would be perfect (I know it’s a porter and not a stout, but still). Its tasty enough, so rest assured that Thick Silky will be dropping by my house next fall. Suckas.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
