I promise you, sea otters are not an ingredient in Red Brick Sea Otter Stout, a beer brewed in partnership with the Georgia Aquarium. I almost feel silly having to explain that (and I’m sure most already figured it), but hey, with all the ingredients beer is made with these days, you just never know.
The beer is, however, a delicious dry stout (they call it an American stout) with proceeds going for a great cause. In fact, the beer is the antithesis of the many and varied beers being brewed today with all kinds of exotic ingredients. This is a good old fashioned roasty and simple stout.
The Georgia Aquarium says this about the beer:
Red Brick Brewing Co., Atlanta’s oldest operating craft brewer, and Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere, have partnered together to create a special-edition winter brew perfect for the holidays, Sea Otter Stout. This roasty American stout brings attention to one of Georgia Aquarium’s most beloved animals, the Southern sea otter. A portion of Sea Otter Stout sales will go towards Georgia Aquarium’s southern sea otter research and preservation efforts.
I’m a big fan of Red Brick myself, and hey, how can you beat a wonderful beer that benefits a great cause? Red Brick Sea Otter Stout has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume and runs $10.99 a six-pack at Total Wine. I paid $7.48 for a 23-ounce draft mug at Taco Mac.
That mug of Red Brick Sea Otter Stout arrived jet black in color with a medium head of creamy tan foam and lots of roasty goodness in the nose. Taking a sip, he beer has a medium to full mouthfeel with notes of dark chocolate, roast, powdered cocoa, and a dry roasty bitter finish.
A great beer for a great cause. Sign me up for more.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
