So there I was digging in DBR Prime (my first Dedicated Beer Refrigerator if you must know), and what to my wondering eyes should appear but a bottle of Ranger Creek Strawberry Milk Stout. I got this treat from the very generous Bill and Jenny Crossen (before they hightailed it to Germany) in a beer trade last fall, and it’s been patiently waiting for me to drink it ever since.
With a name like Strawberry Milk Stout, I can only wonder if this is the Nesquick Bunny’s favorite beer. You know, after Chocolate Milk Stout. But I digress. Actually, the notion of fruited stouts is near and dear to me as well, since I think the dark roastiness of stout goes extremely well with the bright zing of fruit.
Ranger Creek lists this beer under “seasonal and specialty beers” and they say this about it on their website:
Our Strawberry Milk Stout is a stout for spring time. We used 500 pounds of Poteet, Texas strawberries that we picked up from Oak Hill Farms. After being sliced by hand, the Poteet strawberries were added at two separate times during the brewing process to make sure the taste and aroma really came through. The resulting brew highlights the fresh strawberries in a way that we feel the farmers that grew them can be proud of. The strawberries combine with the rich, sweet, creamy chocolate flavors of a milk stout to create a completely unique brew.
Ranger Creek Strawberry Milk Stout has an alcohol content of 5.3% by volume and 23 IBUs.
Ranger Creek Strawberry Milk Stout pours to a jet black color with a light creamy tan head formation on a vigorous pour and a luscious nose of milk chocolate bars and fresh strawberries. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body but packed with flavor, loaded with creamy dark milky chocolate notes that just glide over the tongue and make your taste buds happy, happy, happy. The strawberry comes through in the middle and gets more noticeable as the beer progresses on the palate. At the last, this one is dry and roasty and fruity too.
I really love the way this one works, the chocolate and the strawberry sing together in perfect harmony. The light but bright strawberry flavor really plays well on the creamy, smooth chocolate here. I think with a bit more body it would be perfect, but as it is, it’s close, and very, very delicious.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
