Monoprint Oktoberfest

Here’s another beer I picked up at Total Wine recently: Monoprint Oktoberfest from the Printers Ale Manufacturing Company of Carrollton, Georgia. Heretofore, I had only enjoyed Printers’ beers on tap at Taco Mac, but this time I saw them in cans and in the case of the Oktoberfest, bottles. The six-pack carrier immediately caught my attention, festooned as it is with a checkered Bavarian style label and a fine looking fellow in lederhosen enjoying a beer.

Printers Ale Manufacturing Company (PAMCO for short) is run by, you guessed it, a family of printers, and most of their beers are named after some aspect of the printing business. There are, also, brewers in the family tree. I had to head on over to trusty Wikipedia to get the definition of monoprint.

Monoprinting is a form of printmaking that has lines or images that can only be made once, unlike most printmaking, which allows for multiple originals.

PAMCO says about this beer:

This Oktoberfest beer is a work of art! Pours a clear copper-orange with a robust white head. Malt predominates the aroma with rich notes of raisin and bread. Clean fermentation characteristics originating from the extended cold lagering phase. Medium body but dry finish allows for a perky bite from the carbonation. Prost!

Sounded good enough to get me to buy the beer (the label helped, yes, and the fact I have enjoyed all the beers I have tasted from PAMCO). Still, raisin has no place in an Oktoberfest Marzen beer. Raisin is a fruity ester, exactly the kind of thing the extended cold lagering phase is meant to clean out. Anyway, I didn’t get any raisin here, so glad about that.

PAMCO Monoprint Oktoberfest has an alcohol content of 6% by volume with 35 IBUs. I paid $11.99 for my six-pack; a bit higher than the norm these days. Back in January, PAMCO was the featured brewery of the month at Taco Mac, and I enjoyed their beers there on tap. One of the Thursday night giveaways was the glass pictured here, another one was a calendar printed by PAMCO. The calendar features that beautiful photo of a pretzel and a beer for September. It also included a lot of great coupons for free beer at the brewery, but sadly Covid hit shortly thereafter and prevented me from redeeming any of them.

Monoprint Oktoberfest pours to a beautiful copper color with a thick head of fluffy white foam and a delightful toasty nutty malt nose. Taking a sip, the beer is firm enough in body, rich and malty as appropriate for the style. It pops with deep seated nutty malty Munich malt goodness and I am quite impressed. The finish is balanced to gently bitter with grassy hops.

Very tasty! I am glad I bought a six of this, and not a single. It ranks right up there with the best of Georgia brewed Marzen Oktoberfest beers, though for me it’s behind Tucker Brewing Company’s delightful Tucktoberfest. Still, a beer worth seeking out, and one that goes onto my rebuy list for sure.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
