The Post Road Brewing Company of
Framingham Massachusetts has been contract brewing distinctive ales for some
years. Though contract brewing has been the center of much controversial
discussion among beer lovers, it would be hard to criticize beers as good as the ones Post Road sells. Perhaps
being contracted to a brewery as well-respected as the Catamount Brewing Company
partially explains this. In any event, the growing number
of micros who contract out part of their production only blurs the lines a bit
further between micro and contract beers.
Now, the beer. This is probably the most malty IPA I've ever tasted. It has a very pronounced biscuit-like malt character, followed by a huge hop bitterness. As seems to be the norm for New England IPAs, the British formula is followed and aromatic hoppiness is not really present. First rate.
Brooklyn has been contracting great beers for years, and they are not the only ones. Add to that list Harpoon, Commonwealth, Post Road, Ipswich, New Amsterdam, Dock Street, etc. and you get the idea. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I don't care where it's brewed, if it's good beer, I'll drink it. Anything less would be uncivilized.
$5.50 a six-pack.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
