Must Kuld Porter
Review Date 3/7/2025 By John Staradumsky
Põhjala Must Kuld! I finally scored a bottle of Põhjala Must Kuld. Mind you, this is not the first Põhjala beer to pass these lips. You can go read my review of Põhjala Öö Imperial Baltic Porter and find proof of that. I have also enjoyed their Forest Bänger and Cheesecake Island brews, too. I took tasting notes but have not fleshed out my reviews. More to come on that.
For whatever reason, though, I was desperately in search of the Must Kuld Porter. Maybe it was the name. “Must Kuld” just seems really cool to me. I’m sure I don’t know why, but there it is. I knew that sooner or later I would score a bottle, and I was right. I saw it while shopping for beer at Half Time. I bought it. Here I am.
Põhjala Says:
A rich porter with smooth honey notes. Brewed with lactose for that extra silky texture. Enjoy on its own or as a dessert at the end of a decadent meal. Contains barley malt and lactose.
Ingredients, from the website:
Malts: Pilsner Zero, Munich malt, Cara pale, Crystal 50, Crystal 150, Crystal 200, Carafa type 2 special, Chocolate malt, Lactose
Hops: Magnum, Goldings
Põhjala Must Kuld has an alcohol content of 7.8% by volume with 45 IBUs. I paid $8.99 for an 11.2 ounce bottle; Total Wine sells it for $5.49 in an 11.2 ounce can in Tallahassee, Florida. This is, I suspect, a bottom fermented Baltic porter as it is clean of fruit esters. Then too, Estonia is one of the Baltic states. Would that make it a Baltic Porter regardless?
Põhjala Must Kuld pours to a jet black color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose of soft smooth chocolate and coffee. The beer is smooth and silky throughout with soft creamy milk chocolate notes (lactose helps there). There’s a hint of coffee and the beer finishes balanced with a hit of roast, but not without a subtle kiss of sweetness too.
I found this beer delightful, and I can say I’m glad I Kulded. That means, you guessed it, I Must Kuld again.
Glad I tried it?

Would I rebuy it??
